Requirements

Diagnosed Medical Condition

The treatment must be necessary to improve a deformity directly related to a congenital abnormality, a personal injury resulting from an accident or trauma, or a disfiguring disease.

Letter of Medical Necessity

A Letter of Medical Necessity from a licensed medical professional may be required to substantiate that the procedure is not solely for cosmetic purposes but is medically necessary to treat a qualifying condition.

The IRS generally considers cosmetic procedures, including those for fat reduction or body contouring, as not eligible for reimbursement. However, if a procedure like Vanquish is performed to correct a deformity that is congenital, caused by an injury, or a result of a disfiguring disease, it can be considered a qualified medical expense.
