Quick Reference
The IRS defines medical expenses as the costs of diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease, and for the purpose of affecting any structure or function of the body. While over-the-counter medicines and drugs are generally eligible, expenses for cosmetic surgery or other similar procedures are not considered medical expenses unless they are necessary to improve a deformity arising from a congenital abnormality, a personal injury, or a disfiguring disease. Therefore, Mederma is eligible when used to treat scars that fall under these medical necessities.
