Quick Reference
Splints are considered medical equipment or supplies used for the treatment or mitigation of an injury or medical condition. The IRS allows expenses paid for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease, or for the purpose of affecting any structure or function of the body, to be included as medical expenses.
When It Qualifies
- •The splint must be primarily for medical care, such as treating an injury, supporting a weakened joint, or aiding in recovery from a medical condition.
- •It must be used to affect a structure or function of the body for medical purposes.
When It Doesn't
- •Expenses for splints used solely for general comfort, cosmetic purposes, or for purposes not directly related to medical care are not eligible.
