The IRS considers medicines and drugs to be qualified medical expenses. Following the CARES Act, over-the-counter (OTC) medicines and drugs, including allergy medications, no longer require a prescription to be eligible for reimbursement from health spending accounts.

When It Qualifies

  • The allergy medication must be used for medical care to alleviate or treat an allergy condition.
  • The medication must be legally obtained.

When It Doesn't

  • Medications used for general health or cosmetic purposes are not eligible.
