Requirements

Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN)

A Letter of Medical Necessity from a licensed medical practitioner is required, stating that the Align probiotic is recommended as treatment for a specific medical condition diagnosed by that practitioner.

Diagnosed Medical Condition

The expense must be for the treatment of a specific medical condition diagnosed by a medical practitioner, not for general health or wellness.

Quick Reference

The IRS generally considers the cost of nutritional supplements, vitamins, herbal supplements, and similar products as non-medical expenses. However, an exception is made if these products are recommended by a medical practitioner as treatment for a specific medical condition that has been diagnosed by that practitioner. In such cases, the cost can be included as a medical expense.

When It Qualifies

  • A licensed medical practitioner must recommend Align as treatment for a specific medical condition.
  • The medical condition must be diagnosed by a medical practitioner.
  • Documentation (such as a Letter of Medical Necessity or prescription) must be provided to substantiate the medical necessity.

When It Doesn't

  • Expenses for general health, wellness, or preventative care without a specific diagnosed medical condition.
  • Purchases made without a recommendation from a medical practitioner for a specific condition.
